This was one of those books I was vaguely aware of but didn't really know anything about until a couple of years ago and was then surprised at how much I loved it. It is the story of a very young German soldier in World War I and all the horrors and psychological trauma he endures. It sounds pretty intense and, okay, it does show the horrors of war, but it is also poetic and beautiful and thought-provoking and tender and human. Ah. Just superb.

This is the classic account of the horror, dislocation, and meaninglessness of World War One - "We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces."
This book leans away from the strategies and tactics of the war, instead relying on the more human perspective of a young German soldier. Its honest, often horrifying account, will remain with you long after you finish the last page.
